In India, we’ve seen both stories play out. We built magnificent systems and then watched them collapse. We also built value-driven institutions and watched them outlive generations
A page from Indian history:
The Maurya Empire had one of the most sophisticated administrative systems of its time taxation, espionage, governance manuals like the Arthashastra. It worked efficiently. But it didn’t last.
Contrast that with Ashoka Empire under Ashoka where governance shifted from control to values Dharma, ethics, and welfare. No fancy dashboards. No KPI reviews. Yet his legacy is still studied over 2,000 years later.
Now fast forward to corporate India: We’ve seen companies with:Perfect organisational charts, flawless SOPs, World-class decks and yet they collapse under:
- Governance failures
- Ethical compromises
- Leadership arrogance
We still remember Satyam Computer Services: At its peak:₹8,000+ crore revenue thousands of employees, global clients solid system. But values broken. One confession letter and the empire evaporated.
On the flip side Look at Tata Group. 150+ years old Operates in 100+ countries Revenue exceeding $150 billion. They’ve had setbacks, made mistakes. But the core values never wavered:Trust,Governance, Nation-first thinking That’s why: People don’t just work for Tata. They believe in Tata.
The uncomfortable truth:
Most founders today are obsessed with Systems,Processes,Automation,AI tools. All are good. But here’s the ground reality:
We install CRM systems but forget character management.
We track customer journeys but ignore ethical boundaries.
We measure CAC but not cost of compromised values.
And here’s the data reality:
Corporate governance failures have wiped out billions in market value globally.
Trust deficit leads to customer churn, investor exits, and talent drain.
Rebuilding reputation takes years, sometimes decades One bad decision can undo 10 years of system-building.
A simple lens Systems give you scale. Values give you staying power. Without systems it is chaos. Without values it iscollapse.
For founders & leaders
Will your company survive without you? That’s systems.
Will your company be respected without you? That’s values.
A line worth remembering: My favourite
“You can automate operations but you cannot automate integrity.”
India doesn’t lack builders. We have plenty of people who can build companies. What we need more of: Are people who can build institutions that outlive them, because in the end Companies are created in boardrooms. Empires are built in conscience.
